Isabel Shih Mrs. Jenkins APEL Period 2 3 November 2017 Pro-Crastination It is 11:35 PM, and I am procrastinating. The dim flickering light of my computer screen illuminates my face. The continuous humming of the monitor is interrupted by my fingers tap dancing on the keyboard; I am fueled only by a steaming cup of rich coffee (fortified with forty cups of sugar and creamer) and a burning desire to receive a good grade in the class. Yes, I procrastinated on my essay about procrastination. As I frantically type my essay, I am reminded of the way teachers always tell us,â€Å"This assignment can NOT be done last minute!† Just watch me, I always think. As it turns out, I was right to procrastinate. The legendary author Joseph Sugarman calls this the â€Å"incubation process,† the idea that you generate more ideas by delaying a task (Johnson). This creativity will m ake you more original, more innovative, and more unique, setting you apart from others. Since putting off tasks leads to more ideas, procrastinators--especially entrepreneurs-- have more opportunities. Grant exemplifies the concept with a personal anecdote: a couple of young students asked Grant to invest in their small startup, the online glasses company Warby Parker. Now, they are recognized as the most innovative of companies and worth billions (Kashdan). Their secret? They procrastinate. The day before their launch, they students did not even have a website, despite the fact that their company sells glasses online (Grant). Successful procrastinators not only thrive in the business world, but also in other fields such as the entertainment industry. The creator of the popular show Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon, is another procrastinator. By getting his ideas out there just before a deadline, he is able to do more work than he usually does-- â€Å"in the next few hours I’ll do ten more pages as I would have done in the last two weeks if I had sat down†.
